Vashisht is a village in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, and it is famous for the Vashisht Ashram and the Vashisht Baths. This traditional temple has intricately designed wood carvings and is a major tourist attraction in Manali. It is known to have been the residence of sage Vashisht, who was the sole Guru or teacher of Rama and Laxman. The village is only a few kilometers away from Manali town and lies to the east of the Beas River. With its unparalleled beauty and peaceful environment, this place is the backpacker’s paradise, and tourists visit this place in good numbers every year. According to the Hindu culture, Vashisht village holds immense significance as the heritage served as the residence to one of the saptarishis, Sage Vashisht. There is also a hot spring with the temple called the Vashisht Kund. The legendary story says that Sage Vashisht was heartbroken to know that his children were killed and tried to commit suicide by drowning in the river. River Bipasha refused to drown him, and he could not die. Gifted with a new life, he started living in the village of Vashisht. The Vashisht Temple, reconstructed in 1992, is believed to be more than 4000 years old. The temple is open every day, from morning to evening.

Top Things to do in Vashisht Baths

Like the Hadimba Temple, the Vashisht Baths also have a sense of ancientness in them. In the main room of the ashram is a black stone wrapped in dhoti, which represents the legendary sage Vashisht. The traditional designs with ornamental carvings and artistic figures reflect the age-old background of the temple. There are two hot springs with stone walls erected around them to give some privacy to the people who want to take a dip in the warm waters.

When on a Manali tour, do not forget to soak yourself in the natural hot springs. These came into being naturally in the premises of Vashisht Ashram, which nestles in the middle of luxuriant vegetation of pine trees. The springs are natural Sulphur waters and are believed to contain many particulate metals and radioactive elements, which can cure various skin diseases. These baths are very popular and got their name after the legendary Sage Vashisht, the teacher of Lord Rama. One dip in these waters is enough to revitalize your body and soul.
