Manikaran, about 45kms from the Kullu Valley, is a popular tourist destination and homes a magnificent gurudwara called Manikaran Sahib. This place also has many temples of Hindu deities Rama, Krishna, and Vishnu. Locals believe that the legendary Sage Manu created life in Manikaran after the Great Flood. Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara
Manikaran Sahib or Sri Guru Nanak Devji Gurudwara is one of the main attractions of Manikaran, and Giani Gian Sikh has mentioned this place in the Twelfth Guru Khalsa. A highly revered worshipping center among the Sikhs, it is believed that this Gurudwara was once visited by Guru Nanak himself and his five disciples. The langar or community kitchen of this gurudwara is huge and provides free food daily to the poor and needy people.

Kulant Pith in Manikaran
Kulant Pith is yet another sacred pilgrimage in India. Locals believe that Lord Shiva could not get over how beautiful the place is and stayed here for quite some time. His prolonged stay in this place made it sacred. Vishnu Kund is a hot Sulphur spring located here and is considered to be the purest of all the Kunds present in this region. The locals believe that a dip into the warm spring waters washes away all your sins. The saying also goes that cooking food in the Vishnu Kund takes you directly to heaven.

Lord Ramachandra Temple in Manikaran
Another very popular temple in Manikaran is the Lord Ramachandra temple, which is devoted to Lord Rama and his wife Goddess Sita. This temple is built in the 17th century by Raja Jagat Singh but the idol is in the form of Lord Rama. It is believed widely that the idol of Rama is brought directly from Ayodhya. The temple, located in the center of the city, has ample space for the devotees. The langar or community kitchen here is open for all devotees.

Hot Springs Manikaran
Numerous hot springs and nature’s marvels adorn Manikaran. The natural pools of boiling waters never turn cold. Moreover, these springs contain high quantities of uranium and other radioactive elements that are known to cure many skin diseases. The wonder lies in the fact that whatever be the temperature outside, the spring water is always hot enough to cook rice.

Many legendary stories connect to this place. The Hindus go by the story that while living here Goddess Parvati has lost one of her precious jewelry in a stream that was captured by the snake deity Sheshnag. But he could not hold his ground for long in front of the raging anger of Lord Shiva. Sheshnag hissed up a gush of bubbling hot water, thus returning Goddess Parvati’s jewelry, which is how the hot springs came into being. It also contributed to the name Manikaran meaning Jewel of the ear.

The story of the Sikh belief goes like the langar of the gurudwara did not have the fire to cook and could only offer unbaked chapatis to one of Guru Nanak’s hungry disciples during their stay over here. Guru Nanak then put the unbaked chapatis in the spring water, and it drowned. But a miracle happened as soon as Nanak prayed to God. All the chapatis started floating on the water surface duly baked.
