Malana is a tiny paradise of India, nestled amidst the towering Himalayas and bordered by the Parvati Valley in the north-east and Kullu Valley on the other side, lying in the shadow of the Chanderkhani and Deo Tibba. This ancient village near Kasol is known as the oldest republic in the world and has its own set of government and lawmakers. The Malana people believe that they have pure Aryan genes and are the descendants of Alexander’s Army. The local assumption is that Jamlu Rishi, a deity worshipped by the pre-Aryans, lived in Malana, and he is the one who set up the rules and traditions of the place. This village shelters a thousand tribal people, who are unique in their clothing and dialects, and live in little huts with stone roofs. Malana is world-famous for trading the high-quality and illegal hashish, Malana Cream. Even though the tourists have to register themselves before entering Malana, this Himalayan Village provides the perfect getaway destination for hipsters.
There are three mountain passes that connect Malana with the Kullu Valley. You can reach Malana from the Parvati Valley (Manikaran) which is almost a 10 hour trek across the 3180m high Rashol Pass. The second option is via Naggar across the 3600m high Chanderkhani Pass, which is also a trek of about 2 days. The way that is easiest, shortest and is preferred the most is through the village of Jari, which is connected to the Kullu Valley. The distance is 12kms and a walk of only 6 hours will take you to Malana. On the way, you will cross beautiful waterfalls and the Malan Nallah. Kasol is the last place where you will get enough options to choose where you want to eat. Because as you go nearer to Malana, the food option goes painfully down. You will find a handful of dhabas run by the locals, and the food there is mouth-watering, although the options are pretty limited. The most delicious items you will find are rice, lentil, butter rotis, veg items. Some dhabas also serve non-veg food.
If you can befriend some locals, then you can get good homestay options. Otherwise, you can spend the nights in the tiny handmade guesthouses made by the people of the village. You will be able to find comfortable and cozy rest houses nearer to Kasol. Check out the ones mentioned below:
